George and and his sons were fruit grower on their ranch in Placer and Sacramento Counties in the Antelope/Elverta area (now called Gibson Ranch).
[from History of Gibson Ranch: 1860-2000 compiled by Margaret E. Posehn 2001] Gibson Ranch Park is located at the extreme north end of Sacramento County, off of Elverta Road in Elverta, California.  In 1880, J. S. WOODS and his family left this property for reasons unknown.  The property was sold for the taxes that were owed on it.  The property was valued by the assessor for $25.00 and the taxes levied by the Board of Equalization in Sacramento County were forty-two cents, plus five percent interest.  A lien was levied against the property and when they were not paid the property was put up for sale.  George NICOLAUS paid the said taxes and costs due thereon, including fifty cents for a certificate of such sale, amounting in all to $1.45.  He became the purchaser of the property subject to redemption. A year passed and no word from the WOODS family thus George NICOLAUS became the legal owner of the property.  The ranch became known as the NICOLAUS Estate.
On 28 September 1892 George NICOLAUS leased the ranch to Thomas MCKINNON. The MCKINNONS lived on the Ranch until about 1942 when Donald and Mertie MCDONALD bought the property from Charles J. HASMAN.  HASMAN had inherited the land from his wife Lillian (NICOLAUS).  The MCDONALDS also bought the adjoining farm owned by Lola STILLWELL & Hazel SHEPARD the daughters of Franklin L and Mary Elizabeth (NICOLAUS) WILLIAMS.

The NICOLAUS family built the second story on the ranch house.  It was used as a residence and was later converted into a museum when the Ranch became a state Park called Gibson Ranch.  In 1969, it was condemned and destroyed.
Elisha Sample DRIVER's farm was to the right of the NICOLAUS, his Great Granddaughter Lyn Sara DRIVER GULBRANSEN is transcribing his Daily Ranch Journals! They are chock-full of Antelope and Elverta historical tidbits.

The NICOLAUS house at 2201 P Street was at the corner of 22nd & P Streets.  George and Mary lived there with their daughter Lilly. When their Grandchildren were going to Sacramento High school, they lived at the house.  After Mary's death, Lilly and her husband Charles HASMAN lived there. After Lilly's death HASMAN sold the house. The house was torn down and an apartment building is now there.

George wasn’t the only NICOLAUS who came to California, his brothers Louis, Jacob, Henry, John and their sister Anna Maria Barbara Nicolaus HACK's children were all here by 1880, along with their cousin George Jacob NICOLAUS. Anna Maria KERTH had two sisters Susanna (KERTH NICOLAUS) and Katherine (KERTH MILLER), one brother Wendel, and a niece Emma in Sacramento.  She also had many BACKER, BECKER, HAUCK and STROBEL cousins in California & Nevada.

JOHN HENRY NICOLAUS
John Henry Nicolaus, who has found in farming a dairing the life pursuits which are his best sphere of action and source of greatest prosperity, has a half interest in a splendid ranch off Lower Stockton road about twelve miles south of Sacramento, in Sacramento County, the other partner being his brother George W. Nicolaus. Nicolaus Brothers have long been known for their success and enterprise in the industrial and agricultural life of the county, and their estate of five hundred and eighty acres is acknowledged to be one of the best in this section of the state. A vineyard and a dairy are very profitable departments of their enterprise, and the rest of their land is devoted to general farming purposes.
Mr. Nicolaus is a native son of the state, having been born in Amador county, May 11, 1866, and was a son of old-time Californians, George and Mary (Kerth) Nicolaus. The parents were both born in Germany, and in 1856 came to California, by the isthmus route, making settlement in Amador county, where for a time the father mined gold and then went into the butcher business at Oleta. He moved to Sacramento county in 1880 and took up his residence on the ranch now owned by the Nicolaus Brothers. He subsequently moved to a ranch near Antelope in the same county, and later to Sacramento city, where his death occurred in 1892. His widow still survives, making her home at 2201 P street, in Sacramento, she being now in her sixty-seventh year. Three of their children are still living, the two brothers already mentioned, and Lillie, in Sacramento. The father was a Democrat, and affiliated with the I. O. O. F.
John Henry Nicolaus was reared in Amador and Sacramento counties receiving his education in the schools of these counties. He early became identified with farming pursuits, and has followed that line of work up to the present time. He married, December 6, 1891, Miss Lena M. Harms. She was born in Sacramento county, a daughter of Charles and Lena M. (Dexheimer) Harms, who were both natives of Hanover, Germany. Her father came to California early in the fifties, as an early settler of Sacramento county, where he lived until his death in 1886, and his widow still resides in that county. Mr. & Mrs. Nicolaus have five children, Earl L., George W., Charles E., Helena and Lester B. Mr. Nicolaus is at this writing serving his second term as a member of the board of trustees of Prarie school district, being clerk of the board. Politically he is a Democrat, and is affiliated with Elk Grove Lodge of the Odd Fellows and with Oak Park Parlor N. 213, Native Sons of the Golden West."
